One-Line Bio

Technology writer and blogger, startup advisor, publishing/content professional, social media strategist...and surfer.

Biography

Graeme Thickins has seen many waves of technology in his career, and ridden a good many of them. He's also survived several business cycles over three decades -- and is about to survive another! Somehow, he figures all this couldn't help but bestow upon him a certain amount of wisdom. (Then again, he could be wrong.)

Graeme is the founder of GT&A Strategic Marketing, a marketing strategy, branding, content development, and startup advisory consultancy. Over 25+ years, Graeme has helped more than 100 technology firms launch, grow, and prosper -- many of them from the initial concept stage. In 2007, he began helping clients take advantage of new media, with both strategy and implementation, via a new consulting practice called NewMediaWise.

Graeme has also served in several key interim-executive assignments, including for the launch of BestBuy.com as interim Director of Content, and as interim Director of Marketing for an IT services firm, since acquired. He has also served as VP of marketing for two startups: an enterprise software/appliance firm (recently acquired by a VC-backed Bay Area firm), and, in 2008, for an iPhone and web apps developer.

In addition to his marketing consulting, content development, and startup advisory businesses, Graeme has reported for years on technology conferences via such sites as Conferenza, and of course his own blog. His reports have been published on several other media outlets, including those of eWeek, Network World, Computerworld, Gilder Publishing, and more. He has also written extensively for publication on a wide variety of technology topics and trends (www.graemethickins.com). Graeme has a large national network of leaders and influentials in the technology and investment communities. Recently, he has contributed to an investor publication called The Angel Journal, and several times to one of the leading technology blogs, Read/Write Web. His blog is syndicated on at least a half dozen other sites, and many of his posts also appear regularly on Computerworld's Tech Dispenser site. In 2008, he was invited to be a member of the new Forbes.com blogger network, before it was launched.

Graeme's writings have also appeared recently in the online edition of Chief Executive magazine, and, on a regular basis, in two online news sites in Minnesota:
Minnov8.com, and MinnPost.com. He is currently working on an assignment for eContent Magazine.

Graeme has an alternate base of operation in Southern California, where he writes and blogs "from the beach" whenever he can. Between surf sessions.

Interests

Many of of my interests are categories on my blog, including: innovation, venture capital, IT/software, marketing/branding/PR, angel investing, web 2.0 technology, blogging, entrepreneurship, consumer electronics, conferences (including all the DEMO events), and, of course...surfing! I also like photography, especially surfing and beach related. Many of my photos are at flickr.com/graemethickins, including a favorite set called "Surfing, San Clemente, Sunsets." The surfing photo in my blog banner is one I shot in perfect conditions in December 2005 at San Clemente's Poche Beach, with the sunset over Catalina Island in the background. It's an awesome place -- my favorite spot on the mainland!
